These Guys shoot a lot of videos...

Because of this, the goal is to build and maintain a color solution that gets their content looking great, is quick to apply, and is flexible enough to work in the wide range of locations they shoot in.

• Optimize camera settings for best possible color capture.
• Build a set of LUTs that can be quickly applied in post to achieve "their look".  These are to also serve as in camera monitoring LUTs, and provide the best visual match between their two primary camera types (SONY FS7 and FS5).

Shooting samples

As Austin utilizes a "home base" shooting location, we elected to start crafting the looks with that location as the focus.  

After helping adjust the lighting in their setup, we filmed a set of clips with various common devices/materials (that appear in his videos) on the table.  In addition, we cycled through the different backgrounds that he commonly uses.  I also took a moment to hop in front of the camera (a rarity in the wild) to give an additional skintone sample and hold a ColorChecker.

All of this was filmed simultaneously by both FS7s and the overhead FS5.

Creating the Look

Taking everything that we shot into consideration, I was able to create some looks that Austin and Ken (his head of video production) are both very happy with.

Skintones have some color, and products look true to their actual nature while having a little bit of "pop".  The LUTs are also flexible enough to handle situations ranging from their indoor/pre-lit set, to outdoors with nothing but natural light (see still at the top of this page).

As their setups and cameras change, so will the LUTs (we are currently on version 3), but that's just part of the fun.
